Abstract:
The study of the retroarc area between 38º15’ and 40º00’S allowed us to define and characterize different stages that led to the present configuration of this segment, and to understand the real extent and relative importance of each phase, and how they interralate trough the history of the region. The analysis and distribution of the synrift sequences, and the recognition of the structures which controlled their accumulation, allowed us to characterize the extensional architecture of the region, and led us to define different stages during the mesozoic rift phase. The integration of information and field observations trough the precordilleran system of the south of Neuquén, allowed us to recognize and characterize a first stage of deformation well documented in other sectors of the Neuquen embayment since Jurassic times. Through the structural analysis of this segment, we divide this andean section into an internal and an external domain based on its distinctive structural evolution. The boundary between them coincides the Bio Bio and Alumine valleys, which separates sectors of the fold-and-thrustbelt with opposite vergence and different structural styles. The analysis of the tertiary sinorogenic deposits, and their relation with the main structural features of the area, together with the ages obtained for the cretaceous-paleogene volcanic sequences, and the determination of a structural control in their emplacement, allowed us to define the main contractional phases that affected this segment. The most significant event took place during upper Cretaceous times, related to an esatward expansion of Late Cretaceous to Eocene arc-related sequences. On the basis of tectonostratigraphic controls we define the last Andean contractional phase between upper Miocene – lower Pliocene times, more precisely between 11 and 5,6 Ma for a northern segment, between 10 and 6,2 Ma for a central segment, and between 8 and 4,3 Ma for a southern segment. The recognition and interpretation of the main structures and spatial and temporal distribution of the Tertiary sequences allowed us to establish a tectonic model in which the final uplift of the principal topographic features of the area originated a series of intermontane depocenters were synorogenic and syntectonic sequences were accumulated. The kinematic analysis of tectonic mesostructures allowed us to establish a regime of moderate to low strain partition for this time, with shortening axes orientated according to an ENE direction, which favored the selective reactivation along NNW orientated normal faults of the mesozoic rift phase. The last contractional phase took place after an extensional regime that affected extended segments of the andean margin during Paleogene times. Within this framework, we establish the genesis of the Collón Cura basin as the result of an extensional phase developed since late Eocene times, which later evolved into a foreland basin during the Miocene. The spatial and temporal definition of the different deformational phases across the area, alllowed the correlation with the history of convergence between plates along the South American margin. All these data and observations were integrated in a tectonic and structural model which can be divided into six different stages developed between mesozoic and cenozoic times, which lead to tha present configuration of this andean segment trough a complex history of deformation and alternation of different tectonic regimes.
