El uso de insecticidas para el control de plagas en cultivos agrícolas de la Región Pampeana produjo 36 eventos documentados de mortandad de aves silvestres entre 1996 y 2000. Sin embargo, hay evidencias suficientes para pensar que este registro es muy incompleto y probablemente subestima la real magnitud del impacto. En la última década se evidenció un aumento en las dosis y las superficies tratadas por insecticidas. Los insecticidas más usados entre 1998 y 2002 fueron los piretroides, que superaron el 60% de la superficie tratada, mientras que en 2007 dicha superficie se redujo al 44.9%, con un aumento importante del uso de los organofosforados y los ester cíclicos. Este cambio en los principios activos empleados se reflejó en un aumento de más del 20% de la superficie con riesgo de mortandad aguda de aves entre 1998 y 2007. Esta tendencia podría revertirse por medio del desarrollo de programas de capacitación de aplicadores de agroquímicos en los cuales se considere el desempeño ambiental de cada principio activo y se genere una fuerte concientización sobre el compromiso de mantener un ambiente productivo sano.
The use of insecticides for pest control in agricultural crops of the Pampa Region caused more than 36 documented events of wildbirds mortality between 1996 and 2000. However, there is enough evidence suggesting that these are very incomplete records which probably underestimate the real magnitude of insecticides impact on bird populations. There was an increase in insecticide doses and treated area during the last decade. Pyrethroids were the most used insecticides between 1998 and 2002, exceeding 60% of the treated area, while they were reduced to 44.9% of the treated area in 2007, with a significant increase in organophosphates and cyclic esters. This change in the active ingredients used resulted in a 20% increase in the area under bird mortality risk between 1998 and 2007. This trend might be reversed by the development of training programs for people doing agrochemical applications that consider the environmental performance of each active ingredient used, and by building a strong commitment to maintaining a healthy productive environment.
