Abstract:
Due to the Internet exponential growth, especially in the use of the World Wide Web, the problems that are starting to be experienced are more each day and more complex ones. The traffic in the networks, the servers overload and the latency times are, among others, three of the biggest potential problems that need to be solved. A typical solution to these problems is based mainly on the use of caches and the implementation of Proxy Servers. However, these techinques have important limitations. Although they can be useful, there is a limit to the number of clients that can use the same cache and the Proxy Server can become not only a bottleneck but also a single point of failure. For these reasons study continues in the search of improvements to the systems for better solutions to be found, using new methodologies of caching, automatic document dissemination, better communication protocols and ideas of cooperative Proxy Servers (as in the case of the Harvest Cache) among others. The following thesis adds a new idea to deal with the conflicts that Internet and the use of the World Wide Web are facing at present and it tackles some of the problems in existing solutions. We propose the development of a new scheme that allows multiple Proxy Servers to cooperate among themselves and share their caches in a global area network and through the use of Multicast IP. To accomplish this, we analyze the existing tools to choose the ones we need to build our system, make the corresponding design and implement a prototype. Finally thenecessary tests are carried out to obtain statistical results, evaluate performance and make comparisons.
