Abstract:
Environmental filtering sensu stricto is the primary mechanism in the process of assemblage formation in anthropogenic habitats. Anthropogenic habitat types alter environmental filters in different ways, and they also act on different regional species pool given by the biome. Alpha and beta, taxonomic and functional bird diversity were compared between anthropogenic (cropfields, cattle pastures, tree plantations and urban centers) and natural habitats in two contrasting biomes (grassland and subtropical forest), and between urban centers and natural habitats in forested and agricultural landscape matrices in the subtropical forest biome. It is expected that anthropogenic habitat types that underwent drastic changes in vegetation structure relative to the natural habitat will be the most detrimental to native biodiversity. Also, the influence of each land use on bird diversity will differ between biomes with contrasting vegetation structure and species regional pool. In the subtropical forest, the most detrimental effects of urbanization on native bird diversity are expected to occur in the agricultural rather than in forested landscape matrix. We predict that the impact rankings of habitat types with respect to native diversity loss will differed between biomes, and that the influence of urbanization will also differ between different landscape matrices in the subtropical forest. Results showed that the impact rankings of anthropogenic habitats based on bird species richness and functional diversity differed between biomes. Species and functional traits composition were best preserved in those anthropogenic habitat types that are environmentally more similar to the natural habitat. Differences in taxonomic and functional bird diversity between urban centers and natural habitats were higher in the agricultural than in the forested landscape matrix in the subtropical forest. This is the first study that compares the influence of several land uses in different components and facets of diversity between contrasting biomes. Results contribute to land use planning for biodiversity conservation.
