Abstract:

Intra-aortic counterpulsation (CIAO) determines changes in the vascular properties that can be quantified. Objective: Characterize the effects of CIAO (1:2) on mechanical properties of the aortic wall. Materials and methods: Aortic pressure (mmHg) and diameter (mm), cardiac output (L/mln), and surface electrocardiogram were registered in 6 anesthetized sheep during control beats, and during CIAO (1:2) both in assisted beats and in unassisted beats. From pressure and diameter signals, aortic local compliance, pulse wave velocity and the arterial wall Incremental elastic modulus were obtained for the three types of registered beats. Results and conclusions: An increment (P < 0.05) of the aortic compliance of the aortic wall was observed from assisted to unassisted beats during CIAO 1:2, and a decrease in the pulse wave velocity and incremental elastic modulus (P < 0.05) were found during CIAO in similar conditions. These results demonstrate that the aortic wall shows biomechanical differences between assisted and unassisted beats during CIAO 1:2.
