Abstract:
Thermal etching is studied in pure ice and ice doped with NaCl. Previous work indicates that etch pits on the ice surface, which show the orientation of the crystals, may be obtained using the formvar technique. In the present work, the evaporation rate is controlled by keeping the samples in nearly hermetic enclosures. Etch pits limited by low index planes have been obtained on pure ice surfaces. However the doped ice surface is generally smooth, or, in some cases, it shows a structure of small cells which do not follow the symmetry of the crystals.
