The lattice parameters, tetragonality and lattice distortion of several samples of small-grained barium titanate have been investigated between room temperature and 220°C by diffractometer and Debye-Scherrer x-ray diffraction photographs. The tetragonality decreases by grinding and increases again by annealing; the remanent tetragonality above the Curie temperature disappears by annealing. There is no important lattice distortion. The results appear to be inconsistent with the existence of an anomalous tetragonal surface layer as proposed by Känzig.
