Abstract:

Activated carbon cloths (ACC) from cellulosic and regenerated cellulosic fabrics are obtained by chemical activation with phosphoric acid solution (10 wt%) as impregnating reagent, varying final treatment temperature between 600°C and 950 °C. Acid-free samples are also prepared for the sake of comparison. Electrical characterization is performed to explore the possibility of regenerating the ACC by direct electrical heating. For ACC from the cellulosic fabric, BET surface area attains a maximum (1055 m2/g) at 950 °C, whereas a surface area of 2011 m2/g characterizes the ACC derived from the regenerated cellulosic fabric under identical experimental conditions. Morphology and physical appearance of the ACC depend on the precursor and process variables employed, though all the samples present well preserved fibres integrity. Moreover, electrical properties of ACC seem to be related with the nature of the raw fabric used as precursor. The ACC derived from the cellulosic fabric show higher electrical conductivity than those obtained from regenerated cellulose.
